Satyagraha Ashram = Pujya Gurudev

The Service of the Saint - Satyagraha Ashram
=Pt.ShriRam Sharma Acharya
During my boyhood I had already been attracted by Bengal and the Himalayas, and dreamed of going there. On the one hand I was drawn to Bengal by the revolutionary spirit of Bande Mataram, while on the other hand the path of spiritual quest led to the Himalayas. Kashi was on the way to both places, and some good Karma had brought me as far as that. In the event I went neither to Bengal nor to the Himalayas; I went to Gandhiji, and found with him both the peace of the Himalayas and the revolutionary spirit of Bengal. Peaceful revolution, revolutionary peace: the two streams united in him in a way that was altogether new.

When I had reached Kashi the air had been full of a speech which Bapu had delivered at the Hindu University there. In it he had said a great deal about non-violence, his main point being that there could be no non-violence without fearlessness. The violence of the mind, shown in violent attitudes and feelings was, he said, worse than open, physical violence. It follows from that that the most important aspect of non-violence is inward non-violence, which is not possible without fearlessness. In the same speech he had referred critically to those Indian Princes who had come to the meeting decked out in all kinds of finery. This had all taken place a month before I arrived, but it was still the talk of the town. I read the speech, and it raised all kinds of problems in my mind. I wrote to Bapu with my questions and received a very good reply, so after some ten or fifteen days I wrote again, raising some further points.
Then came a postcard. ’Questions about non-violence,’ he wrote, ’cannot be settled by letters; the touch of life is needed. Come and stay with me for a few days in the Ashram, so that we can meet now and again.’ The idea that doubts could be set at rest by living rather than by talking was something that greatly appealed to me. Along with the postcard came a copy of the Ashram rules which attracted me still more. I had never before encountered anything like them in any institution.
’The object of this Ashram, I read, ’is service of our country in such ways as are consistent with the welfare of the world as a whole. We accept the following vows as needful to attain that object.’ Then followed the eleven vows: truth, non-violence, non-stealing, self-control, bodily labour and so on. This struck me as very surprising indeed. I had read a great deal of history, but I had never heard of vows being regarded as necessary for national freedom. Such matters, I thought, are found in religious texts, in the Yoga Shastra, and for the guidance of devotees; but here is someone who insists that they are necessary for national service too. That was what drew me to Bapu. Here was a man, I felt, who timed at one and the same time at both political freedom and spiritual development. I was delighted. He had said "Come", and I went.

Remedies = Pujya Gurudev

Present Scenario of Sufferings and Remedies
= Pt. ShriRam Sharma Acharya

Excessive tension, depression, excessive sex, unchecked drainage of vital elements because of sensual excitation, abnormal sleep (especially overrsleep), excessive laziness etc are some of the causes of abnormal variations in normal physiological and biochemical (including hormonal) functions which may lead, among other diseases and disorders, to cancers. Cardiac problems (Heart Diseases), Cancer, Hypertension, Diabetes, Liver Psoriasis, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, Encephalitis, and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are among the major diseases leading to death of a significantly large proportion of world population. Of these Heart Diseases and Cancer are among the most dreaded challenges to healthcare in the developing as well as the developed world today. Although many effective medicines have been discovered and are available in the market to treat several kinds of cancer and the rate and possibilities of cure have also improved during the last two decades, the positive diagnosis of this disease continues to be traumatic for the patient and his near and dear ones.

The major bottlenecks are the lack of early diagnosis and the complexity of genomic variations and related biochemical reactions in the cause, proliferations and control of cancers. Because of the difference in genomic constitution and variations in the state of cell cycles when the carcinogenic mutation might have occurred or when the drug reaches the cells, etc, the same medicine might be very effective in certain kind of cancer in one person whereas it might be slow, ineffective or even have sidereffects (including progression of cancer in some other organ, etc) in some other patient of the same disease. In modern medical terms the major types of cancers are malignant tumors, neoplasm and carcinomas. The synonyms in Ayurveda are arbudgranthi, adhimansa and karka-aburda. Unani medicine terms it as rasauli. In simple terms cancer is a transformation of some cells in the body, which have excessive growth rate and abnormal biochemical reactions. These cells proliferate like 100% compound interest and suppress the growth of normal cells.

This transformation may occur due to various causes r prominent among them being mutations (due to eating chemically synthesized stuff, or eatables kept in reprocessed polythene, etc), reactions of certain chemicals (e.g. lead) rr especially pollutants in air and water, thickening of some internal tissues, unnatural exposure to ultraviolet radiations etc. Cancer can occur in any part of the body including internal organs, bones, glands, flesh, blood, etc. The elements causing cancer are broadly termed as carcinogens. Many of the modern medicines are found to contain chemicals that prove carcinogens under certain conditions inrvivo. Several antibiotics also cause malignant transformation of some tissues or organs.

Hormone therapy is among prominent causes of breast cancer in women. Some kinds of fungus on wheat, rice, maze and groundnut etc are also identified as carcinogenic. Some toxic elements, which may not be dangerous poisons, are found to be mutagenic, many of these are causes of cancers. For example, the elements in aphlatoxin category are found to cause liverrcarcinomas. Some varieties of mushrooms are also found to have carcinogens. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is increasing such risks in most of our vegetables and grains too. The danger is higher in case of nonrvegetarian food as the pollutants, mutagens, infections and genetic aberrations in the animals carry the disease or its cause in those who eat the animal’s flesh or organs, etc. Tobacco or its smoke (in bidi and cigarette), betel leaf (pana), betel nut, gutka or pana masalas, chewing gum, alcoholic drinks, etc are high risk causes of cancers of the tongue, throat and GIrtrack. Breathing tobacco smoke and polluted air may cause cancers of thoracic region and lungs. Because of use of synthesized chemicals and preservatives etc, chocolates, toffees, cold drinks, prercooked tinned eatables and junk food, etc are also prone to cause cancers in different parts of the body.

Endocrine secretion of people working near or under highrgrid power or high voltage circuits sometimes get so disturbed that the new or perturbed hormonal secretions lead to abnormal transformation of mental and bodily functions. The latter often lead to different kinds of cancers. Ayurvedic experts give simpler, yet comprehensive description of causes of cancers. These include, infection in wounds, eating infected flesh or bones etc, indiscipline of snehan, vaman, virechan, persistence of dysentery, piles, urine infection, vomiting, untreated acnes, infections of genitals or uterus during pregnancy or in case of abortion, artificial diet (e.g. junk food, chemically synthesized or preserved food), excessively spicy and pungent food, smoking and consumption of alcohol, breathing impure (polluted) air, etc. Medication not compatible with the prakrati (natural constitution in terms of vat, pitta and kapha) of the patient, repeated surgery of an acne or wound, incomplete removal of pus in a septic boil or its drying by use of chemicals or medicines, repeated forced control of urination or excretion, are also regarded in Ayurveda as among major causes of cancer. Excessive tension, depression, excessive sex, unchecked drainage of vital elements because of sensual excitation, abnormal sleep (especially overrsleep), excessive laziness etc are described here as causes of abnormal variations in normal physiological and biochemical (including hormonal) functions which may lead, among other diseases and disorders, to cancers.

As per Ayurvedic scriptures, it is also likely that some genetic abnormalities which occurred in the foetus get activated and expressed at a later stage when specific extrarcellular or intrarcellular environment is available and result in cancerous transformation of specific cells. (This is significant in view of the latest research on cancerous phenotypes being very specific to one’s genotypes). As tumors or abnormal growth in any part of the body without pain or other manifestation happen to be most frequent cases of cancers, let us look at these in a little more detail. Modern (Allopathy) as well as ancient (Ayurveda) sciences of medicine classify tumors in two broad categories r Benign (ordinary) and Malignant (cancerous). The benign ones are removed by surgery and except for some precautionary measures, there is nothing to worry. However, if left retained in the body, these may sometime turn malignant. The malignant tumors, even in the initial stage, are dangerous as they proliferate at abnormally rapid rate and become extremely painful. Not only that, if left without any check, they may spread across the whole body and gradually destroy all normal functions.

Moreover, after a certain stage, no amount of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy can uproot them completely. The dangerous (viz, malignant) tumors are of two types: those generated by epithelium (referred as upakala in Ayurveda) are called "carcinomas" and those of the connective tissues (sanyoji utaka) are termed as "sarcomas". Usually normal tumors are termed according to the location or type of cells they are formed by. These include: Fibroma (tantu arbuda), Lipoma (vasa arbuda), Xanthoma (pita arbuda), Chondroma (upasthi arbuda), Osteoma (asthi arbuda), Myeloma (majja arubuda), Myoma (mansa arbuda), Myxoma (slesma arbuda), Giloma (snayu arbuda), Neuroma (nasi arbuda), Odontama (danta arbuda), Papilloma (twagankura arbuda), etc. Malignant connective tissue tumors i.e., sarcomas most often grow in the bones, majja (marrow), and skin and are named as Osteosarcoma, Myosarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, etc. Some tumors are also named according to their visible forms, such as Adenoma. Most dreaded of the malignant tumors are the carcinomas. These most frequently grow in the slesma (phlegm or mucus) or outer sleshmic membrane of organs. Prominent locations of these are in the lips, tongue, mouth, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, liver, rectum, etc. Apart from these organs, the female organs more prone to carcinomas are breasts and uterus and the male organs having high risk are urinary organs (mutendriya) and prostate gland. Usually people above fortyrfive years of age are more prone to these; however, the global records do show the numbers of youngsters suffering from carcinoma are not insignificant. Not only the painful growth, the profuse bleeding from matured carcinomic tumors makes the patient’s condition most pathetic and miserable. In linguist terms, the word meaning of cancer is crab, which is a creature of arthropod family of the animal kingdom.

Carcinoma is a word of Greek origin r a conjugation of "carcinos" (which means crab) and "oma" (which means tumor). This means a gaantha (tumor) which is protruded like a crab. The protruded back of the crab consists of a webr like structure of veins. Similar is the appearance of a cancerous tumor. Crab spreads its paws in all directions and is unpredictable which direction it might move ahead. Similar is the case of the growth of a malignant (cancerous) tumor. It can spread in any direction, no one can predict which one and how. Its roots are hidden deep inside. More than forty types of carcinomas have been identified in modern medical research so far. The ancient texts of Ayurveda refer carcinomas as tridosaj gulma or mahagranthi (c.f. Charak Samhita) and sanghaatik arbuda or tridosaj arbuda (c.f. Shushrut Samhita). As of today, in the modern approach, surgery is supposed to be most effective measure against cancerous tumors. However, even if a single fiber or cell is left behind, there are 100% chances of recurrence. Prer and postr operative radiation therapies are therefore necessary; however the side effects of these are no less painful. Moreover, this works only if the particular type of cancer is radiationrsensitive. In many cases, chemotherapy is therefore given as a necessary evil.

Leukemia or blood cancer is altogether different and more complicated type of cancer, treatment of which requires chemotherapy. In the bone marrow, spleen and other blood producing components start generating excess of white blood corpuscles (WBC). Unless the drug type and doses are compatible with the stage, type and cause of the disease and above all, the genetic configuration of the patient, complete cure cannot be assured. Nowrardays, some kinds of hormonal therapies are also tried but again, only few expert doctors and therapists can do wonders. Anti angiogenerin drugs are prominently used in chemotherapy, which block the supply of blood and oxygen to the tumor cells. This way the tumor cells and hence the tumor itself is gradually destroyed. Intensity modulated radio therapy, radio frequency ablation, stereo tactic radiortherapy, etc are among the advanced techniques used in treatment of cancers r especially in breast tumor, prostate tumor, neck tumor, brain tumor, heart tumor, etc.

Hormone therapy is usually applied in treatment of breast cancer. This works on the basis of balancing estrogen and progesterone hormones. However, in spite of significant advancements in all the modern methods, the expenses, the sidereffects of killing of the normal cells and disturbance of metabolism, etc continue to limit their applicability at large. With the rise in the frequency of occurrence of varieties of cancers and complications in people’s liferstyle and mindrbody balance, one needs to look at the support of alternative and complementary modes as well. Ayurvedic herbal therapy offers an effective solution here. We are introducing an effective method of yagyartherapy in this context in another article in this very issue of "Akhand Jyoti r The Light Divine".

Fulfillment of desires = Pujya Gurudev

=Pt.ShriRam Sharma Acharya
The desires are not to be shunned. What are to be decried and abandoned are their form and the low means of achieving them. The desires are supposed to be excellent only when they ensure the benefit of others along with that of the self. If the best possible means for achieving them are to be searched, it may be found in one word "yajna" which is the essence of the knowledge gained through lifelong experimentations of the illumined sages.
No doubt, Kamya yajna (the yajna for fulfilling a particular desire) is not only helpful in fulfilling the different desires but is also fully capable of doing so. It produces vibrations and builds up an atmosphere that brings forth the desired results. Several times, it has been found that the desired results are obtained then and there. In ancient times, many Agnihotri (sages, who were experts in performing yajna) possessed the knowledge of different methods of performing Kamya yajna.
They employed these methods for preventing calamities and for initiating the process of achieving great successes. These methods have been almost forgotten today. There is need to investigate, afresh, the mysteries of these yajnas, so that the golden age experienced by the sages could be recreated. Some hints about Kamya yajna are available here and there; but these are only hints. They throw ample light on the capabilities of our ancestors. So far as the question of their experimentation and the achievement of desired results are concerned, they have been kept secret, keeping in view the oath of secrecy by their discoverers. Even then, they do serve as hints for the curious persons.
Here is a collection of few of them :-

Lata varvasu vividdidya somasya juhuyatadima / Some surpaa sanyukte prayokta kshaya shantaye // Meaning: Tuberculosis is cured by performing yajna with the herb "sarpalata" on the day of Amavasya (no-moon day).
Kusumai shankha vrikshasya hutva kushtha vinashayet / Apasmar vinashastadapamargasya tandule // Meaning: Relief is obtained from Leprosy by offering oblations with the flowers of shankha tree. Epilepsy is cured by offering oblations with the seeds of Apamarg.
Chandandwaya sanyuktam karpur tandulam yavam / Lavanga suphalam chajyam sita chamrasya daruke // Apam nyuna vidhiha prokto Gayatryaha pritikarkaha / Meaning: A person becomes dear to Gayatri by offering oblations with both the sandalwoods (red and white) , camphor, rice grains, barley, clove, coconut, ghee (milk fat), mishri (sugar crystals) and samidha (wood or fuel for yajna) of mango tree.

Some Remedial Tips =Pujya Gurudev

                        =      Pt.ShriRam Sharma Acharya
As we discussed earlier pyorrhea is among the most acute and dangerous ailments of teeth. It begins with accumulation of the layers or particles of substances chewed or gulped via mouth, some of which are deposited on the gums, some get stuck in between the teeth (especially the jaws) or at the root of the teeth near the gums. The chemicals released in the saliva during night also add to these. If not cleaned properly these would rotten inside and become host to a variety of bacteria and germs. Swelling, reddishness or pain of the gums is an alarming warning of this hazard.
The layer of dirt spreads on the teeth, they appear yellowish. Mouth begins to stink. These are early symptoms of pyrrheatic ailment. Successively things go worse, the gums begin to bleed with a little pressure or jerk of the toothbrush.
Unless one takes proper medicated care and treatments, at early stage there wont be any hope; the gums would go septic with the pus inside them rotting the teeth roots too. The pus further grows and spreads with the bleeding gums risking its entry into the stomach and thus inviting other diseases. After a certain stage there is no complete cure of pyorrhea except taking huge amounts of antibiotics and suffering the negative side effects along with uprooting of the denture. The Ayurvedic herbal therapies recommended in the scriptures and practiced, though at a limited scale, even today, provide effective cure of pyorrhea and several other dental and oral diseases.
The remedies including  doing yagya with the herbal preparation consisting of the dry powder of following plant medicines in equal proportions: Kachoor or kapurkachari (Zedoary), Sheetal Chini (Cubebs, Tailed pepper), Akarkara (Spanish Pollitory), Babool (Indian Gum Tree) bark-skin, Khadir or Khair (Black Catechu) bark-skin, Arimeda (Cassie Flower) bark-skin, Sirisha bark-skin (East lndian walnut), Neem (Margosa) bark-skin, Molashri (Surinam Medlar), Patang (Caesalpinia Sappan), Manjishtha, (Madder Root, India Madder), Kareel (Capparis aphylla Roth), root of Chameli (Common Jasmine), Ilayachi (Cardamom), Ratan Jota (Belly ache bush), Sugandhabala (Indian Valerian), Saarivan (Indian sarsaparilla), Agar (Aquilaria Agallocha), Daruhaldi (Indian Berberry), Padmakha (Mild Himalayan Cherry), Lavang (Cloves), Chandan (sandalwood), Tagar (Moonbeam), Jawasa (Persian Manna) Dalchini (Cinnamom bark), Dhaya Pushpa (wood fordia floribunda) Nagarmotha (Nutgrass), Mulahathi (Liquoric Root), Khas (Cuscus grass), Jatamansi (Spikenard), Aakmula (Mudar root), Lodhra (Symplocos bark), Pippali (Long Pepper), Rasaut (Extract of Indian Berberies), leafs of yellow Katsariyya (Spiny yellow-Barleria), Dhamasa (Fangonia arabica), Haldi (Turmeric), Ajamoda or Ajavain (Carraway, Ajova or Ani Seeds), Apamarg (Prickly-chaff Flower), Asan (Spinous kinotree), Kateri (Solanum indicum), Kayphala (Myrtalberry), Bada (Banyan) bark-skin, Majuphala (Gallnut), leafs of Menhadi (Henna), Supari (Beetal Nut), Kalimirch (Black Pepper), Javitri (Mace), Bayavidang (Barbreng), Punarnava (Hogweed Horse Purslene), Bacha (Sweet flag), Sauntha (Dry Ginger), and Triphala [mix of equal proportions of Anwala (Emblic Myrobalan), Baheda (Beleric Myrobalans, Beddanut) and Harad (Chabulic Myrobalans)].

Occult Science of Astrology =Pujya Gurudev

Occult Science of Astrology and its Role in Healing and Health
=Pt.ShriRam Sharma Acharya
The positive role of astrology in spiritual healing has been demonstrated through the ages. If the spiritual healer is well versed in astrology he can draw a very close estimate of the patients past and future courses of life. True, in modern times astrology has become a victim of many kinds of misconceptions and criticisms. Variety of malpractices and superstitions have tarnished and overshadowed the basic scientific premises of this great science. But if these layers of popular blind beliefs are unpeeled and its real character deciphered, its scientific worth becomes apparent. It is a very effective technique of personality assessment.
It gives a glimpse into a persons latent potentialities and future prospects. It fairly accurately predicts what major hurdles one will be coming across in life or which ill-fortunes are likely to befall him at which specific points of time. But for this, it would be necessary to have a clear understanding of its nature and functioning. Modern science accepts the truth that this universe is instinct with energy. Indeed, the physicists have now gone to the extent of according primacy to energy waves over material particles.
They hold that matter is only an illusive appearance; the substratal reality is nothing but energy. Everything in this creation whether animate or inanimate was pure energy before taking form, will dissolve into the cosmic formless energy waves after physical death. The scientist and the spiritualist both agree that this all-pervading energy has many levels and states, which are continually changing. This perpetual flux is the cause of the origin, sustenance and dissolution of the creation.
There is, however, a theoretical disagreement though between the scientists and the spiritualists as to why this change occurs. While science ascribes this to mere chance factor, the spiritual viewpoint considers it as born out of the cosmic consciousness-force as an absolute necessity for the creational process. According to this view, change in the circumstances of a human being, a higher order living being, is caused and guided by his actions, thoughts, emotions and resolves.
This is the core premise of the science of astrology. This science also postulates that in this life-long cycle of changes the different levels of the cosmic energy are also affected in some way. These different energy levels have been classified by the experts of astrology in symbolic codes, which are expressed as navagraha (the nine planets), twelve zodiac signs, twenty-seven naksatras (constellations), etc.

Emotions = Pujya Gurudev

Know the Essence of Tender Emotions
=Pt.ShriRam Sharma Acharya

The aspiring minds may want to know how to create tender emotions in life, how to feel emotional contentment? The answer is very simple. The flow of tender emotions increases by expression, but dries up by suppression.
Aham tasteva vandhuram paryachami hrida matim. Kuvitomasyapamiti. - Rigveda 10/119/5
Meaning: As the carpenter mends the sitting arena of the chariot, so do I refine my intellect with my (pure) heart. Have I, indeed, consumed soma? Tender emotions are the pivot of jivana sadhana. All the virtues in life flow from and revolve around them. It is emotions that give the sense of contentment in life. Whatever new heights of development and progress are scaled in disregard of emotions will leave a nagging feeling of emptiness and vacuity. All the acquisitions of wealth, power, respect and honour fail to give inner satisfaction; the interior always feels thirsty for something else. The lack of emotional warmth makes one feel penurious in the midst of opulence.
This is intensely felt by those who have seen their sentiments being crushed to pieces, whose trusts have been betrayed in life, who have longed for some warmth and got none, and who have suffered in silence the agony of repeated emotional blows. Their vacant eyes and throbbing hearts are pointers to the fact that emotional pains dissolve like a slow poison in life. From this poisonous admixture spring innumerable mental disorders. The origin of all psychological ailments lies in hidden, crushed, betrayed and tormented emotions. On the other hand, if there is a proper sprouting of emotions in life and they are nurtured with care and love, miraculous changes are inevitable.
Such persons become masters of innumerable virtues and the fragrance of their personalities permeates the whole surrounding. Not only they themselves feel contented but even those in their contact and vicinity find their lives becoming meaningful and joyous. This is so because it is the golden truth of life that where the magnetic force of emotional sensitivity is very intense, there is a continual and proportionate generation of virtues. Contrariwise, wherever insensitivity grows, there is a matching upsurge of vices and evil tendencies all around. The aspiring minds may want to know how to create tender emotions in life, how to feel emotional contentment? The answer is very simple. The flow of tender emotions increases by expression, but dries up by suppressing.
It is a type of wealth which the more you spread around, the richer you become, but a niggardly attitude leaves you a destitute. Hence the seekers of emotional fulfillment are advised that rather than trying to get the warmth of someone else’s emotions, they give out their own warm emotions to the needy and the sufferers. The result of this pious and selfless action will be, in all circumstances, highly satisfying.

Self –Expression = Pujya Gurudev

Self –Expression Should Be Effective
=  Pt. ShriRam Sharma Acharya
Ashvina saraghena ma madhunankta subhaspati Yatha varchasvatim vacham avadani janan anu. - Atharvaveda 9/1/19
O the gods of light, Ashvini Devas! Endow me with the honey made by honeybees, so that I may speak to the people in a sweet and illuminating tongue. Speech is the chief medium of expression. It reveals the inherent qualities of the personality. Behavioural skill, talent, and inner strengths - all find expression through it. But on the obverse side, the blemishes and weaknesses are also mirrored. For the wise, even a short conversation is sufficient to assess the general qualitative level of a person. It does not take long for the pettiness of the petty and the goodness of the good to come out through this medium.
But although the chief medium, speech is not the only one; there are other agencies too, namely, facial expressions, eye expressions, modes of sitting and standing, gestures, and so on. They are all voices of the personality which many times are able to communicate it fully even if the tongue is silent.
The buoyancy of self-esteem, the gleam of self-confidence, the listlessness of self-contempt and the hesitations of latent complexes - all these feelings and emotions reveal themselves this way. This expression of self is not an entirely unconscious or involuntary action. It can be improved and refined by the use of will power and by proper training. But for this, we will have to understand and evaluate ourselves afresh, watch our conduct, and resolve to root out the bad habits, which have crept into our characters. Are we ready for this? Ask this question of yourself repeatedly. If the answer is in the affirmative, you can definitely express yourself so effectively as to impress and even overwhelm those whom you meet.
Thanks GOD,Thanks Sadguru,
Shiv Sharma
